Harkness Memorial State Park: Engagement & Portrait Photography

If you’re looking for a photo location in Connecticut that gives you a little bit of everything, Harkness Memorial State Park in Waterford is hard to beat.

There’s the historic Eolia mansion, beautiful formal gardens, wide-open lawns, and the Long Island Sound shoreline, all within the same property. That variety makes Harkness such a fun place for engagement sessions, proposals, graduation photos, couples sessions, and even wedding portraits.

And honestly, that’s one of my favorite things about photographing here: you don’t have to choose between a garden setting and the beach. You can have both.

The Gardens: Romantic, Classic & Full of Character

The formal gardens surrounding Eolia are one of the biggest reasons Harkness stands out as a photography location.

The property has several distinct garden spaces, including the East Garden, West Garden, Boxwood Parterre, Alpine Rock Garden, and Cutting Garden. The West Garden has a more formal Italian feel, with symmetrical paths, fountains, fencing, and landscaping, while the East Garden has a softer English garden style.

For photos, that means there are plenty of little corners to explore rather than simply standing in front of one backdrop.

You can get beautiful walking photos along the garden paths, more posed portraits surrounded by greenery and flowers, or those candid in-between moments where you're simply wandering around together.

And depending on the season, the gardens can look completely different.

This is especially beautiful for couples who want their photos to feel romantic and timeless without being overly formal.

The Eolia Mansion: A Little Bit of Old-World Elegance

Then there's the star of the property: Eolia, the historic Harkness mansion.

Built in 1906, the Roman Renaissance Classical Revival-style mansion has 42 rooms and sits among the gardens and expansive seaside grounds.

Even if you're primarily interested in outdoor portraits, the architecture adds something really special to your gallery.

The stonework, columns, pergola, pathways, and surrounding landscaping create a completely different look from the beach. It gives your photos that elegant estate feel without needing to travel to multiple locations.

And I love that contrast.

You can start with classic portraits around the mansion and gardens, loosen things up as you walk through the grounds, and then finish along the water as the sun starts getting lower.

One location. So many different looks.

The Beach: Coastal Photos Without Needing a Typical Beach Setting

Of course, we can't talk about Harkness without talking about the water.

The park sits along Long Island Sound, with a sandy beach, rocky shoreline, and beautiful coastal views. The beach isn't your typical crowded summer swimming beach (swimming isn't permitted here, but that's actually part of what makes it such a beautiful setting for photos).

The shoreline gives us a completely different backdrop from the gardens.

Think:

  • Walking barefoot along the sand
  • Sitting together by the water
  • Wind moving through your hair
  • Rocky shoreline portraits
  • Wide, open views of the Sound
  • Golden-hour photos with the sun behind you

And if we're lucky with the timing, the evening light along the water can be absolutely gorgeous.

For couples, this is where I love letting the session become a little less posed. Instead of worrying about what to do with your hands or where to stand, we can simply walk, talk, laugh, and enjoy being together.

Those moments usually end up being some of my favorites.

The Open Lawns & Grounds

One of the things that can be easy to overlook at Harkness is just how much open space there is.

The mansion sits on more than 230 acres of seaside property, with sweeping lawns, mature trees, gardens, and coastal landscapes throughout the grounds.

That gives us room to create photos that feel more natural and spacious.

The open lawns are especially beautiful when the sun is lower in the sky. You can get that warm, glowy backlight while the trees and landscape create depth behind you.

It's also a great place for photos that feel a little more candid, walking together, spinning around, talking, or simply enjoying the location instead of looking directly at the camera.

Why Harkness Is Such a Great Location for Photos

There are plenty of beautiful places in Connecticut, but what makes Harkness special is the variety.

You can start your session in the gardens...

Move over to the mansion...

Walk through the expansive grounds...

And end along the shoreline.

The result is a gallery that doesn't feel like every photo was taken in the same five-foot area.

That's particularly helpful for engagement sessions and proposals, where you want the photos to tell a little bit of a story rather than just be a collection of poses.

It's also a fantastic option for graduation portraits, maternity sessions, family photos, anniversary sessions, and wedding portraits.

And because the park is so visually diverse, we can choose the areas that best fit you and the type of photos you're looking for.

My Personal Take on Harkness Memorial State Park

These are some of my favorite kinds of sessions to photograph at Harkness because there's so much opportunity to create something that feels personal.

Whether you're planning a proposal, celebrating your engagement, graduating, getting married, or simply want beautiful photos with someone you love, Harkness gives us an incredible starting point.

My goal isn't just to put you in front of a pretty background.

I want your photos to feel like you.

We'll explore the property, find the light, take advantage of the gardens and architecture, and make our way toward the water when the light is right. You don't need to know how to pose or feel comfortable in front of a camera, that's my job.

You just have to show up, be yourselves, and enjoy the experience.

Thinking about taking your photos at Harkness?

I'd love to photograph you there.

Whether you're planning an engagement session, proposal, graduation portraits, wedding, or just want to document this season of your life, let's create something beautiful together.
