Hey Huskies! As a former University of Connecticut student on the Storrs campus, I’ve had my fair share of exploring the campus across all seasons of the year. Although I’ve graduated quite a few years ago now, I get the opportunity to come back every year to capture the next generation of Huskies on campus before they walk across that graduation floor, diploma in hand (and hopefully some kisses from Jonathan if you’re lucky).

With literally thousands of students from all schools graduating in the span of a few days, you can imagine how popular certain spots on campus are to take photos to commemorate this milestone achievement. I’m all about the classic spots (who can’t resist a little Jonathan the Husky statue nose rub photo) but I’m here to tell you about a few stunning, tucked away spots that will hopefully be just as special of a backdrop to incorporate into your graduation photo session.

Why did I choose these spots (besides the less waiting in line appeal)? It’s because the character and vibrancy of these locations really encompass the heart of what being a student at UConn is all about: classic, bold and a touch of that Nutmeg state charm.

One: South Reading Room at Wilbur Cross

For all my Harry Potter fans out there, this study area reminds me a little bit of the very beautiful classic library in the movie. Or at the very least, a not-so-stuffy, comfy area to relax or get an essay done 24 hours before its due (obviously I wouldn’t know anything about that). When I capture images, I love to get the framing just right, and the large windows and long aisles created by the tables do just that.

Two: Small stone and grass walkway behind Wilbur Cross

Just a step away from Wilbur Cross if you are exiting from the side closest to the heart of campus (behind the Benton Art Museum) is a very private, secluded small park with a mini babbling fountain and gorgeous stone walkway. The way the trees both shade and enhance the sunlight that comes through feels cinematic and creates the perfect lighting for any time of day.

Three: Horsebarn Hill (the actual hill, not the road)

Take a hike. Literally. You just can’t beat the view of the entire campus behind you if you walk the trail up the hill for your photos. Instead of going to the top, I recommend taking the right fork from the small parking lot so you can really take in the view behind you and hopefully get a few UConn cows in the background, too.

Four: Fairfield Way

At a certain time of year, there are stunning pink flowers that bloom right across from the Babbidge Library. Even before you hit the library coming from Gampel, you already have a huge art piece to pose with: the UConn logo! This is a spot where throwing your cap up in the air is definitely encouraged.

Five: Gampel Pavilion (more specifically the sidewalk in front of it)

I enjoy incorporating as much movement into my photos as I can to make my clients feel comfortable and un-posed. One of the ways I do that is through a lot of walking; and what better way than to cross the sidewalk in front of Gampel, wind in your hair and husky paw prints by your feet? This is the perfect spot for group photos so everyone can have their catwalk moment.

Are any of these spots on your list or will you incorporate them along the way in your photo session? I still have a few spots left and would love to capture your graduation memories at some of these locations and more - just give me a shout! Congratulations, Huskies.
